  • This project uses blockchain technology to impact SDG #13, which aims to combat climate change. At the same time, it will allow several small and large enterprises to reduce their net carbon emissions by purchasing high-quality carbon credits. By using blockchain technology to trade and settle high-quality carbon credits, the platform can expand voluntary carbon markets, thereby creating more opportunities to finance emission removal or reduction projects.

Customer Privacy

Why Airtel Ads is investing in blockchain | Exchange4media

  • This project also aims to address the issue of Customer Privacy, by creating a content-driven privacy-safe Adtech platfrom that uses blockchain and federated learning technologies to ensure that brands using this platform do not breach customer privacy, and comply with tightening regulations around privacy issues. Airtel acquired a blockchain company in February 2022 that enables it to create such a platform and will be integrating its technology across its suite of digital solutions. Having such a platform would protect brands that use this platform from breaching customer privacy, stay compliant with regulations, and engage in responsible advertising.

Renewable Energy

Stedin to deploy blockchain energy asset management solution | Smart Energy

  • This project supports SDG #7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Under this goal, the UN has set a 2030 target for increasing substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Decentralized or distributed renewable energy resources are a very effective way to increase renewable energy production, but their integration with the existing power grids remains a challenge that is stopping this technology from realizing its full potential and turning consumers into producers. Under this project, a distribution system operator (DSO) in the Netherlands, will use blockchain technology to seamlessly manage decentralized energy assets as well as assets owned by the DSO, such as smart meters and distribution automation. It is expected that this would allow DSOs to improve grid security without requiring hardware changes while improving the efficiency of the grid.

Chemical Weapons

The Stimson Center and OARO partner on developing the world’s first blockchain prototype for monitoring and tracking the international chemical trade | Press Release

  • This project aims to address the very important sustainability issue – Chemical Weapons. Many ESG investors across the globe are using involvement in activities promoting biological and chemical weapons, as an exclusionary criterion to screen out companies from their potential investment portfolios. This project can enable monitoring and tracking of international trade of “scheduled chemicals” listed under the Chemical Weapons Convention.  These chemicals are used in industrial processes for peaceful purposes but can also be used to make chemical weapons.

Sustainable Mining

Blockchain Gems: Natural Emeralds Come With Smart Contracts | Be In Crypto

  • This project focuses on SDG #8, which aims at promoting decent work and economic growth, by using blockchain to ensure ethical and sustainable mining practices followed to mine Columbian Emeralds. The company claims that it uses ethical and sustainable mining practices in Columbia, and makes use of blockchain technology to provide complete traceability and provenance of the emeralds. This will allow buyers to ensure that they are buying gemstones that have been sustainably mined.

Gold market to use enterprise blockchain for gold bar integrity | Ledger Insights

  • This project again focuses on using blockchain to address SDG #8, which aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. It does this by trying to drive transparency in the gold supply chain, so as to ensure that the gold being traded has been sustainably mined and traders, investors, or buyers can have visibility into the chain of custody for the gold that they are buying. Over the years, the rising demand and prices for this precious metal have driven malicious actors into the gold supply chain who tend to use unsustainable mining practices such as using child labor, forced labor, unsafe mining conditions, etc. Buying gold that is sourced from these actors funnels the money to them that is again used for atrocities in Africa.

  • This project uses blockchain technology to impact SDG #5 which aims to drive gender equality. Motorsport remains heavily biased in favor of men, be it the employees at factories, pit crews, or the drivers. This project allows female drivers to raise money by selling NFTs and reducing dependence on sponsors, thereby increasing their chances of competing in motorsport.

SDG #13

Carbonplace and Climate Impact X collaborate to revolutionize carbon credit trading | Press Release

  • This project uses blockchain technology to impact SDG #13, which aims to combat climate change. AirCarbon Exchange plans regulated carbon exchange within Abu Dhabi Global Market | Ledger Insights

  • Companies: Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), AirCarbon Exchange (ACX), Polygon Technology
  • Sustainability Issues: SDG #13 (Climate Action), Carbon emissions
  • Solution: ADGM will regulate carbon credits and offsets for spot and derivatives markets for all trades that happen on ACX carbon offset marketplace. The familiar regulatory framework should encourage more companies to trade on the blockchain based carbon marketplace, that provides better traceability of carbon credit ownership and real-time settlement.

Blockchain-based ClimateTrade admitted to EEX mandatory carbon market | Ledger Insights

  • Companies: ClimateTrade, European Energy Exchange (EEX)

  • Sustainability Issues: SDG #13 (Climate Action), Carbon emissions

  • Solution: Carbon marketplace CarbonTrade has been admitted to EEX, which allows it to trade in European mandatory carbon markets. This means that credits traded on this marketplace can be exchanged under the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS), and can contribute towards official decarbonization targets. This should expand the European carbon trading marketplace, increasing trading activity and liquidity in this market, ultimately leading more carbon offsetting.

SDG #15

Brazilian company bets on NFTs and blockchain to save the Amazon rainforest | Euro News

  • This project directly addresses SDG #15, which aims to Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss. In this project, the company that owns 410 square kilometers of Amazon rainforests is issuing NFTs to raise funds for forest conservation. Proceeds of the fund raised against NFTs will go towards preserving the trees, regenerating clear-cut areas, and fostering sustainable development. The project will require remote sensing technology to capture the progress of environmental conservation, through satellite imagery, to ensure transparency in the use of funds.

As solar energy is abundant during daytime, the company plans to incentivize select customers who sign-up for a special rate, for shifting energy usage to hours when solar power is abundant. Through this program the customers can save up to $150 or more if they spend more energy during ‘solar hours’. This will optimize the use of solar energy that is available to the company, while increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the local energy mix.

SDG #3

Blockchain firm Equideum and Nokia building exchange to let patients sell healthcare data | Computer World

  • Companies: Nokia [HEL: NOKIA], and Equideum Health

  • Sustainability Issues: SDG #3 (Good Health and Well-being). One of the targets under this goal is to support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries.

  • Solution: Nokia is partnering with Equideum health to build a marketplace where patients can monetize their health data by selling it to research organizations. The marketplace – Equideum Exchange is a blockchain based platform that will allow patients to select the organizations and the duration for which those organizations can utilize their health data. It protects the patient identity by tokenizing the information and pays the patients via stablecoins (cryptocurrency backed by fiat currency). The platform will allow information availability for research providers in a framework that is compliant with regulations (HIPAA), which will improve the quality and pace of research, while benefiting the patients directly for their participation. If the platform can bring patients from developing countries, all research organizations could potentially have access to their data, which will help organizations in developing medicines and vaccines for them.
